The city of Chicago is continuing to see a decrease in gun violence, according to local news outlet WQAD. The city has 29 homicides this month—10 fewer than were reported around the same time last year.
Not only has 2018 witnessed Chicago’s homicide rate decline by 17 percent, but the city’s shooting victims have also plummeted by close to 30 percent.
Chicago police say the drop coincides with the expanded use of technology that helps police better identify areas where crimes are likely to be committed and respond quicker to shooting incidents.
Despite the city’s reduced gun violence, crime data shows that the luxury areas are experiencing an increase in robbery. So far, there have been 86 robberies, most of which happened in the city’s North Side. Only 49 robberies occurred in this part of the city last year.
Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson attributes most of the robberies to juveniles. Juveniles make up about 40 percent of robbery suspects arrested this year, he said.
