Several Democrats have been conceding to pressures to disavow Louis Farrakhan, with statements being put out to denounce the anti-semitic nature of some of his rhetoric. But those targeted for resignation over their association with the Minister have each stopped short of succumbing to demands for them to step down.
Earlier this week a lobbying group that dubs itself The Republican Jewish Coalition, called upon seven members of the House of Representatives to give up their seats for having met with the controversial Nation Of Islam leader in the past. Among those named were Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif.; Danny Davis, D-Ill.; Keith Ellison, D-Minn.; Barbara Lee, D-Calif.; Al Green, D-Texas; Andre Carson, D-Ind.; and Gregory Meeks, D-N.Y.
The Coalition's focus on a Democratic Party-Farrakhan connection comes days after infighting was sparked among Women's March organizers following reports of co-chair Tamika Mallory having been at a recent Nation Of Islam function, during which the Minister referred to powerful Jews as his enemy. As a result of the discovery, several organizers have begun to isolate Mallory, with the Planned Parenthood Votes Northwest and Hawaii group revoking her scheduled keynote speech at a Seattle luncheon, for example.
Rep. Meeks took the time to lay out his condemnation of Farrakhan's words, but in-kind, he also called out the Republicans chastising him for not using their own advice and addressing President Trump's divisive words. "Farrakhan's anti-Semitic messages are upsetting & unacceptable, Meeks tweeted. "Also upsetting that right-wing blogs suggest otherwise & try making this a black vs. Jewish community issue. Still waiting for those blogs to condemn Trump's racist remarks."
